Google Cloud Platform is assembling a specialized team dedicated to Web 3 to capitalize on cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. This suite of cloud computing services is launching a new Web 3 team with a primary focus on developing services for developers engaged in blockchain applications. Additionally, the team will offer blockchain services to enterprises and clients interested in harnessing this technology. The newly established Google Cloud Web 3 division, led by former Citigroup executive James Tromans, has already outlined its roadmap. This roadmap includes enhancing the management of blockchain nodes and developing software for exploring blockchain data within third-party applications.

Amit Zavery, Vice President at Google Cloud, commented on the formation of Google Cloud’s Web 3 group in a company email (as reported by CNBC), stating, “While the world is still in the early stages of embracing Web 3, it is a market that is already showing tremendous potential, with many customers requesting increased support for Web 3 and crypto-related technologies.”

Zavery further emphasized the plan to position the Google Cloud Platform as the preferred choice for developers. He reiterated this stance during a media session, highlighting the new group’s role in supporting advancements in the crypto space.

The services offered by the Web 3 group will be similar to those already provided by major tech companies, including Alibaba and Amazon. Microsoft had previously offered blockchain services until last year when the software giant discontinued its Azure blockchain services. Consequently, Google Cloud will be vying with Alibaba and Amazon for a share of the market in cloud infrastructure services.

It’s worth noting that in January, Google Cloud revealed plans for a Digital Assets Team to collaborate with its customers. This decision followed the explosive growth of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and at the time, Google was exploring cryptocurrency payment options.

Google has partnered with various blockchain-focused companies, including Chainlink, Ontology, EOS, Theta Network, and Hedera Hashgraph. Additionally, the tech company has engaged in a blockchain project with Dapper Labs’ Flow blockchain.
